How to Take a Leap to Another Career Path
Are you currently feeling unfulfilled by your current job? Do you feel like you’re not living up to your potential career-wise? If you answered yes to either of these questions, it might time to consider switching your career path. The idea of changing careers may seem like a big undertaking, but with the right guidance, it can be a lot less scary than you think. Here’s how to start taking a leap to another career path:
Reflect on Your Skills
If you feel stuck at your current job, sit down and make a list of your skills. Contemplate everything—from the abilities you naturally excel at, to any hobbies you’ve developed, to classes you’ve taken. Make sure you list both hard skills, which are skills you have learned (such as being fluent in another language, being able to use a certain machine or software, or a degree you have gotten) and soft skills, which are interpersonal skills (such as leadership, excellent communication, or being a top-notch problem solver).
Research the Jobs Available
Use your list of skills as keywords to search job boards for jobs looking for people with these skills. Of course, while you may have some of the skills listed on the job postings, you probably won’t meet all the criteria the employer is looking for. If this is the case, think about volunteering or taking a course to gain the type of experience you may need for a job in a new field you are interested in. Reading through job postings is a fantastic way to discover what you’ll need to succeed on your new career path.
Take the Leap
Once you’ve reflected, done your research, and supplemented your skills with any others you may need to pursue this new career path, it’s time to start applying to jobs. Don’t forget to tailor each of your job applications to the position you’re applying for and to take your time editing your resume and cover letter. Send out a lot of applications, because even if you only get one job offer out of a hundred applications, you can feel proud of the fact you’ve successfully taken the leap to another career path.
